Ice climbing we did. New to both of us, it was SO much fun and surprisingly different than rock climbing. Chris, Eli, our new friend Patrick and I went cruising up these crazy mountain roads deep into a canyon in the Cordillera Blanca with our guide, Willie. From the trailhead, we had an insanely beautiful hike into Lago Llaca. We saw waterfalls, glaciers, glacial lakes and huge snowy mountains surrounding us. There is this certain color light blue in the glacial streams and lakes that I have only caught glimpses of in Alaska, it is absolutely breathtaking. I think we walked extremely slow because we were dragging our jaws along the trail... it was unreal!!
The ice wall we were to climb was a little muddy, but it was the most stable piece of ice around so we weren´t complaining. Equiped with snow pants and boots, crampons, helmets, gloves and two ice axes, we were ready to climb high. It was pretty rough on your hands swinging those ice axes deep enough into the ice that you could trust your weight on them - totally new rush. The view from the top was spectacular, we´re talking crazy insane mountains all around you! whoooooooo! Such a feeling of accomplishment.
